I recently watched the movie the Girl with the Pearl Earring, which was inspired by Johannes Vermeer's famous painting. It was a great film (especially the parts with Colin Firth), but it also spoke to the beauty of the painting The Girl with the Pearl Earring.
Some time ago, I came across the image of this woman in a cosmetic advertisement in a magazine. The image was quite striking, and I liked it so much that I cut it out. Later, I added other elements of collage to make the big headdress which is constructed from a photograph of a satin dress and a large flower. The image shares some similarities to the Girl with the Pearl Earring, especially in the way she half-smiles and looks at the viewer from over her shoulder. I thought that it would be fun to play with this idea a bit more, so I sketched out a new but similar drawing.
Unfortunately I did not have much time to create anything more from my sketch, so there it sat in a pile of papers. Yesterday I had some free time, so I took the opportunity to turn the sketch into a paper collage. It turned out better than I expected, and I like the colors and the textures. It is quite a thick piece. The eyes alone are made from six layers of paper. If the light shines on it just right, it looks like she has bug eyes! I hope to turn this work into a print for the future, but right now I wanted to share it.
